What Stores Sell Fabric by the Yard?
Hobby Lobby and Michaels are the two national chains that still cut fabric by the yard, and Hobby Lobby carries considerably more of it. Beyond those two it is independent fabric shops and quilt shops, and we have 854 shops confirmed as cutting by the yard from their own websites.
Hobby Lobby
1,078 branches in our listings. The fabric department is a real one: quilting cotton, fleece, flannel, apparel fabric, home decor and utility fabric, plus outdoor. It is the closest thing left to a big-box fabric aisle. Stock still varies by store, and the range in a smaller branch is noticeably thinner.
Michaels
952 branches. Michaels is a craft retailer that happens to carry some fabric, mostly quilting cotton and fleece, often in precut form rather than on the bolt. A few branches list fabric as coming soon and do not have it yet. If you need it cut to length, ring the branch before you go.
Independent shops
This is where the range is. An independent will usually beat both chains on a specific category rather than on breadth: a quilt shop will have cottons neither chain approaches, an upholstery shop will have weights and widths no craft store carries. Browse by what you need: quilt shops, apparel fabric stores, upholstery fabric stores, outdoor fabric stores.
How we know what each shop carries
We read shops' own websites and record what they say they stock, with the page we read it on. Where a shop does not say, we leave it blank rather than guess, so a missing fabric type means we could not confirm it, not that the shop has none. More on that in how we check listings.
